Travel document basics
Visa, ETA or arrival card?
Similar online forms can serve very different purposes. Start with what the destination actually requires for your passport and journey, then keep each requirement on your checklist.

Three documents to keep separate
| Document | What to check | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Visa or eVisa | The category, purpose, entries, validity and permitted stay. | Assuming a tourist category permits every activity. |
| ETA or similar authorization | The official eligibility rules and relationship to any visa exemption. | Calling every electronically issued document a visa. |
| Arrival card or declaration | Who must complete it, when, and whether every traveler needs a form. | Assuming it replaces a visa or guarantees admission. |
Build your checklist in the right order
- Start with your travel document. Use the passport you will carry. Your country of residence is a separate fact, and may matter for the application route.
- Write down the full itinerary. Include transit stops, re-entry after a side trip, arrival dates and the purpose of each visit.
- Check the official visa or exemption rules. If the answer is conditional, resolve the condition before choosing a paid service. Do not infer eligibility from another traveler’s experience.
- Check additional declarations. Visa exemption does not automatically remove an arrival-card requirement. Follow the declaration’s submission window.
- Review the issued documents. Check names, passport numbers, dates and entry counts. Keep the authority’s confirmation and instructions accessible for travel.
Validity is not the same as permitted stay
A document may have a deadline for entering and a separate limit on the visit. Single entry and multiple entry describe another condition. Read each item independently instead of treating the largest number on the page as the length of your holiday.
For example, Cambodia’s official tourist T-visa page lists a three-month validity and a one-month stay. Check its current instructions before applying.

Thailand’s visa system and its Digital Arrival Card are separate official services. Check the appropriate visa or exemption route and the arrival declaration for your circumstances. A completed declaration is not an issued tourist visa.
Find the right starting point
Our destination pages explain requirements and distinguish visa categories from other travel documents. No guide or private service can guarantee admission. Always confirm current requirements with the relevant authority before travel.
